Catherine Phillips is a Bristol-based TV producer with several years' experience producing and project managing factual programmes with an international perspective.
She's also a German speaker and, by her own admission, is a history "geek"!!
Catherine's presentation at Walkers & Talkers on 16 July was originally the subject of her dissertation for her Master's degree. This explored the fate of German and Italian 'enemy aliens' who were interned following the outbreak of war in 1939.
In 2004, Catherine travelled to Australia to find hitherto unexplored historical sources and in so doing she unexpectedly met one of the last survivors of these internees, who were known collectively as the 'Dunera Boys'.
It is a fascinating story - part thriller, part social history and part investigative journalism but mostly it is a tribute to human spirit and resilience of these internees in the face of bureaucracy and often truculent and hostile officialdom.
