About the event
Roland Butcher is a distinguished former cricketer who made history as the first black man to play Test cricket for England. Born in Barbados, he went on to represent Middlesex and England as a stylish and talented batsman, retiring from first-class cricket at the end of the 1990 season.
Following his playing career, Butcher turned his attention to coaching and development. He served as the Cricket and Football Coach at Westminster School and St Edward’s School in Oxford, and took up head cricket coaching roles in various cricket-playing nations, helping to shape the next generation of talent.
In 2004, he returned to his native Barbados to serve as Director of Sports at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus – a position he held with distinction until his retirement in July 2019.
